An Astrologer's Day
( From page no. 2) Punctually वेळेवर at midday he opened his bag and spread out his professional equipment, which consisted of a dozen cowrie कवडी shells शंख, a square piece of cloth with obscure mystic गूढ charts on it, a notebook, and a bundle of palmyra तळहाताएवढे पुस्तक writing. His forehead was resplendent तेजस्वी with sacred ash and Vermilion शेंदूर किंवा लाल रंग and his eyes sparkled with a sharp abnormal gleam असामान्य चकाकी which was really an outcome परिणाम किंवा निष्पत्तीof a continual searching look for customers, but which his simple clients took to be a prophetic भविष्य सुचक light and felt comforted. The power of his eyes was considerably enhanced अत्यंत वाढणे by their position placed as they were between the painted forehead and the dark whiskers मिशीचे कल्ले which streamed down his cheeks: even a half-wit's अर्धशुद्धी eyes would sparkle in such a setting. To crown मुकुट the effect he wound a saffron-coloured केशरी रंगाचा turban पगडी किंवा फेटा around his head. This colour scheme never failed. People were attracted to him as bees are attracted to cosmos जग किंवा विश्व or dahlia stalks. डेलिया फुलाची फांदी He sat under the boughs फांदी of a spreading tamarind tree चिंचेचे झाड  flanked a path रस्त्याच्या बाजूला running through the Town Hall Park. It was a remarkable place उल्लेखनीय ठिकाण in many ways.(from page no. 3).A surging वाढती crowd was always moving up and down this narrow road from morning till night. A variety of trades and occupations was represented all along its way: medicine sellers, sellers of stolen hardware and junk, भंगार magicians, and above all, an auctioneer लिलाव करणारा of cheap cloth, who created enough din गोष्ट सांगणे किंवा ठसवणे all day to attract the whole town. Next to him in vociferousness कर्कश आवाज came a vendor of fried groundnut, भुईमूग शेंगा who gave his ware विकायचा माल a fancy name each day, calling it “Bombay Ice Cream” one day and on the next “Delhi Almond," बदाम and on the third "Raja's Delicacy, सौजन्य and so on and so forth, and people flocked to him. A considerable जास्त प्रमाणात portion of this crowd dallied जास्त वेळ थांबणे before the astrologer too. The astrologer transacted धंदा करणे his business by the light of a flare वाढवणे which crackled कर्कश आवाज करणे and smoked up above the groundnut भुईमूग heap nearby.Half the enchantment जादू of the place was due to the fact वस्तुस्थिती that it did not have the benefit of municipal lighting. The following was lit up प्रकाशित होणे by shop lights. One or two had hissing फूसफुसने gaslights, some had naked flares भडकणे stuck on poles, some were lit up पेटवणे by old cycle lamps, and one or two, like the astrologer, managed without lights of their own. It was a bewildering गोंधळ crisscross आडवातिडवा of light rays and moving shadows. This suited उपयुक्त the astrologer very well, for the simple reason that he had not in the least intended कमीत कमी हेतू to be an astrologer when he began life; and he knew no more of what was going to happen to others than he knew what was going to happen to himself next minute. He was as much a stranger समजण्यास कठीण to the stars as were his innocent निष्पाप customers.Yet he said things which pleased आनंदी and astonished everyone : that was more a matter of study, practice, and shrewd चतुर किंवा धूर्त guesswork. तर्क All the same, it was as much an honest man's labour as any other, and he deserved योग्य किंवा लायक असणे the wages वेतन he carried home at the end of a day.
He had left his village without any previous thought or plan. If he had continued there he would have carried on the work of his forefathers पूर्वज - namely, tilling फरशीने झाकणे the land, living, marrying, and ripening पिकवणे in his cornfield and ancestral प्राचीन home. But that was not to be. He had to leave home without telling anyone, and he could not rest till he left it behind 'a couple of hundred miles'. To a villager it is a great deal, व्यवहार as if an ocean flowed वाहने between.
He had a working analysis विश्लेषण करणे of mankind's मानवजातीचे troubles:marriage, money, and the tangles गुंतागुंत of human ties. मानवी संबंध Long practice had sharpened his perception. आकलनशक्ती Within five minutes he understood what was wrong.(from page no.4) He charged three pies पैसे/बिस्किट, केक, पेस्ट्रीज, बटर इ. पदार्थ per question, never opened his mouth till the other had spoken for at least कमीत कमी ten minutes, which provided him enough stuff कच्चा माल for a dozen answers and advices. When he told the person before him, gazing at एकटक पाहणे his palm, तळहात "In many ways you are not getting the fullest results for your efforts,” nine out of ten were disposed मन वळवणे to agree with him. Or he questioned "Is there any woman in your family, maybe even a distant relative दूरचा नातेवाईक who is not well disposed चांगले वागणे towards you?" Or he gave an analysis विश्लेषण ofcharacter: "Most of your troubles are due to your nature. स्वभाव How can you be otherwise with Saturn शनि where he is? You have an impetuous nature उतावीळ स्वभाव and a rough exterior." बाह्य स्वरूप This endeared सहमत होणे him to their hearts immediately, for even the mildest सौम्यपणा of us loves to think that he has a forbidding exterior. भितीदायक बाह्य स्वरूप
The  nuts vendor काजू व्यापारी blew out फुंकणे /बंद करणे his flare प्रखर ज्योत and rose to go home. This was a signal for the astrologer ज्योतिषी to bundle up गुंडाळणे too, since it left him in darkness except शिवाय for a little shaft किरण of green light which strayed भटकणे in from somewhere and touched the ground before him. He picked up his cowrie कवडी shells शंख and paraphernalia खाजगी मालमत्ता and was putting them back into his bag when the green shaft  of light प्रकाश किरण was blotted out. बंद करणे /टाकने He looked up and saw a man standing before him. He sensed वाटणे a possible client गिराईक and said: "You look so careworn. चिंताग्रस्त/काळजीवाहू It will do you good to sit down for a while and chat with me."The other grumbled चिडलेला some reply vaguely. अस्पष्टपणे The astrologer pressed his invitation; whereupon आणि त्यावर the other thrust घुसवणे his palm under his nose, saying: "You call yourself an astrologer?"The astrologer felt challenged and said, tilting वाकवणे the other's palm towards the green shaft किरण of light: "Yours is a nature..." "Oh, stop that, the other said. "Tell me something worthwhile..."फायदेशीर Our friend felt piqued. चिंतन करणे I charge only three pies पैसे/बिस्किट, केक, बटर इ. पदार्थ per question, and what you get ought to be पाहिजे असणे good enough for your money..."At this the other withdrew मागे घेतली his arm, took out an anna, पैसे and flung it फेकणे  out to him, saying "I have some questions to ask. If I Prove you are bluffing, फसवणे/थाप मारणे you must return that anna पैसे  to me with interest."
"If you find my answers satisfactory, will you give mefive rupees?"
                                          "No."
“Or will you give me eight annas?"
"All right, provided you give me twice as much if you are wrong," said the stranger. वाटसरू  This pact करार was accepted after a little further argument. चर्चा (from page no.5)  The astrologer sent up a prayer to heaven as the other lit a cheroot. सिगारेट The astrologer caught a glimpse ओझरते दृश्य of his face by the matchlight. आगकाडीचा प्रकाश There was a pause as cars hooted कर्कश आवाज येणे on the road, jutka घोडागाडी drivers swore शपथ घेतली  at their horses, and the babble मूर्खपणाने वेगात बोलणे of the crowd agitated नाखूश करणे the semidarkness of the park. The other sat down, sucking his cheroot, सिगरेट ओढणे puffing out, धूर बाहेर सोडणे sat there ruthlessly. निर्दयपणे The astrologer felt very uncomfortable. "Here, take your anna back. I am not used to such challenges. It is late for me today"... He made preparations to bundle up. गुंडाळणे The other held his wrist मनगट and said "You can't get out of it now. You dragged ओढून आणणे  me in while I was passing." रस्त्यावरून जाणे The astrologer shivered थरथरणे  in his grip पकड and his voice shook थरथरणे and became faint. "Leave me today.I will speak to you tomorrow." The other thrust घुसवणे his palm in his face and said: "Challenge is challenge. Go on." The astrologer proceeded पुढे जाणे  with his throat drying up: "There is a woman..."
"Stop," said the other. "I don't want all that. Shall I succeed in my present search or not? Answer this and go.Otherwise I will not let you go till you disgorge रिकामे करणे all your coins." The astrologer muttered पुटपुटणे a few incantations मंत्र and replied: "All right. I will speak. But will you give me a rupee if what I say is convincing? खात्री पटणे Otherwise I will not open my mouth, and you may do what you like." After a good deal व्यवहार of haggling, घासाघीस करणे the other agreed. The astrologer said: "You were left for dead. Am I right?"
                                     "Ah, tell me more."
"A knife has passed through you once?" said the astrologer.
"Good fellow!" सोबती He bared उघडा झाला his chest to show the scar."What else? दुसरे काय
(From page no.6) "And then you were pushed into a well nearby in the field. You were left सोडणे  for dead."
"I should have been dead if some passer-by वाटसरु had not chanced to peep उडी मारणे into the well, exclaimed the other, overwhelmed भारावून जाणे by enthusiasm. उत्साहाने
"When shall I get at him?" he asked, clenching घट्ट करणे his fist. मुठ
"In the next world," answered the astrologer. "He died four months ago in a far-off दूर town. You will never see any more of him."the other groaned दुःखाने रडणे on hearing it. The astrologer preceeded: पुढे सांगणे
                                           "Guru Nayak-"
"You know my name!" the other said, taken aback. पाठीमागे
"As I know all other things. Guru Nayak, listen carefully to what I have to say. Your village is two days journey due नेमके/योग्य north of this town. Take the next train and be gone. I see once again great danger to your life if you go from home." He took out a pinch चिमुटभर of sacred ash and held it to him. "Rub घासणे it on your forehead and go home. Never travel southward दक्षिणेकडे again, and you will live to be a hundred."
"Why should I leave home again?" the other said reflectively. परावर्तितपणे "I was only going away now and then to look for him and to choke out सुरळीत होणे /ठीक होणे his life if I met him." He shook his head regretfully. दुःखाने "He has escaped my hands. I hope at least he died as he deserved." लायक असणे "Yes," said the astrologer. "He was crushed under a lorry."The other looked gratified आनंदी/समाधानी to hear it.
The place was deserted निर्जन by the time the astrologer picked up his articles साहित्य and put them into his bag. The green shaft किरण was also gone, leaving the place in darkness and silence. The stranger had gone off निघून गेला into the night, after giving the astrologer a handful of coins.
It was nearly midnight when the astrologer reached home. His wife was waiting for him at the door and demanded मागणी केली an explanation. He flung फेकणे the coins at her and said "Count them. One man gave all that."
"Twelve and a half annas," पैसे she said, counting. She was overjoyed. आत्यानंदित होणे "I can buy some jaggery गुळ and coconut tomorrow. The child has been asking for sweets for so many days now. I will prepare some nice stuff खाऊ/सामान for her."
"The swine तिरस्करणीय व्यक्ती has cheated फसवणे me! He promised me a rupee,"said the astrologer. She looked up at him."You look worried. What is wrong?"
                          (From page no.7) "Nothing."
After dinner sitting on the pyol, बेड he told her"Do you know a great load is gone from me today? I thought I had the blood of a man on my hands all these years. That was the reason why I ran away from home, settled here, and married you. He is alive."
She gasped. धाप टाकने "You try to kill him!"
"Yes, in our village, when I was silly मूर्ख youngster. We drank, gambled, जुगार and quarreled badly one day-why think of it now? Time to sleep,"he said, yawning जांभई देणे and stretched आडवे पडणे himself on the pyol. बेड
