(From page no.28)  soapy left his bench and strolled टरकून out of the square and across the level sea of asphalt डांब रासारखा पातळ पदार्थ, where Broadway and  Fifth Avenue झाडीचा रस्ता flow together. Up Broadway he turned, and stopped at a luxurious अत्यंत आरामदायक cafe.
Soapy had confidence in himself from the lowest button of his vest जॅकेट upward. He was shaven, गुळगुळीत केस कापणे and his coat was trim नीटनेटका/व्यवस्थित and his neat, व्यवस्थित black bow धनुष्य had been presented to him by a lady missionary धर्मप्रचारक on Thanksgiving Day. नोव्हेंबरचा चौथा गुरुवार If only he could reach a table in the restaurant unsuspected, संशयास्पद success would be his. The portion नशीब/भाग of him that would show above the table would raise no doubt in the waiter's mind. A roasted भाजलेले mallard duck, एक रानटी बदक thought Soapy, would be about the thing with a bottle of wine and then some cheese, दुधाचा पदार्थ a cup of coffee and a cigar. One dollar for the cigar would be enough. The total would not be so high as to call forth any extreme अत्यंत of revenge बदला from the cafe management; and yet the meat would leave परवानगी him filled and happy for the journey to his winter island.
But as Soapy set foot inside the restaurant door, the head-waiter's eye fell upon his tattered trousers फाटलेली विजार and decadent उतरती कळा लागलेला shoes. Strong and ready hands turned him about and conveyed सांगितले  him in silence and haste घाई  to the side-walk and averted टाळले the ignoble लाजिरवाणे  fate नशीब  of the menaced धमकी दिलेले mallard. एक रानटी बदक
Soapy turned off बंद केले Broadway. It seemed that his route to the coveted हवेसे वाटणारे  island बेट was not to be an easy one. Some other way of entering the limbo बंदिवास/तुरुंग must be devised. युक्ती काढणे/तयार केली.
At a corner of Sixth Avenue झाडीचा रस्ता electric lights and cunningly लबाडीने displayed wares वस्तू behind plateglass खिडकीची काच made a shop window attractive. Soapy took a stone and dashed फोडणे it through the glass. People came running round the coner, a policeman in the lead. नेतृत्वात  Soapy stood still with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass पितळ धातूचे buttons.
"Where's the man that done that?" inquired the officer agitatedly. उत्तेजित होऊन/मग्न होऊन.
"Don't you think that I might have had something to do with it?" said Soapy, with a friendly voice, as one greets स्वागत  good fortune.
The policeman refused नाकारणे to accept Soapy even as a clue. मागमूस/सूचना  Men who smash फोडणे windows do not remain to chat with the police. They take to their heels. टेकडी The policeman saw a man half-way down the block अडथळे running to catch a car. With drawn आराम नसलेला/काढले club he joined in the pursuit. पाठलाग करणे Soapy, with disgust तिरस्कार in his heart, drifted पडणे along, बाजूला twice unsuccessful.
On the opposite side of the street was a restaurant of no great pretensions. बढाई It catered भागवली to large appetites भूक and modest नवीन/विनम्र/मर्यादित purses. पर्स/एकत्र पैसा गोळा करणे Its crockery मातीची भांडी and atmosphere were thick; its soup रस्सा and napery नॅपकिन thin. Into this place Soapy betook ताब्यात ठेवले himself without challenge. At a table he sat and consumed सेवन केले, beefsteak गाईच्या मासाचा भाजलेला तुकडा flapjacks, ओट व बटरपासून तयार केलेले मऊ बिस्कीट doughnuts छोटे भाजलेले केक and pie. बेकिंग केलेली डिश And then he told the waiter the fact स्थिती that the minutest छोटे coin and himself were total strangers.
"Now, get busy and call a cop", पोलीस said Soapy. "And don't keep a gentleman waiting."
"No cop पोलीस for you," said the waiter, with a voice like butter cakes and an eye like the cherry in the Manhattan cocktail. मिश्र मादक पेय "Hey, Con!"फसवणे
Neatly सुबकपणे upon his left ear on the callous असभ्य/निष्ठुर pavement two waiters pitched फेकले  Soapy. (from page no.30)   He arose, उठणे joint by joint by joint,as a acarpenter's rule opens, and dusted झटकणे/झाकलेले his clothes. Arrest अटक करणे seemed now but an elusive पटकन न आठवणारे dream. The island बेट seemed very far away. A policeman who stood before a drugstore दवाखाना two doors away laughed and walked down the street.
Soapy was seized जप्त with a sudden fear that some dreadful enchantment जादू had rendered प्रस्तुत him immune त्यापासून सुरक्षित  to arrest. अटक करणे He was in a state of panic, तीव्र भीती and, when he came upon another policeman lounging बैठक खोली grandly महान  in front of a glittering लखलखणारे theatre, he caught at the immediate तात्काळ straw तुच्छ वस्तू of 'disorderly conduct'. दंगलखोर वर्तन
On the sidewalk पदपथ  Soapy began to yell किंचाळणे drunken झिंगलेला gibberish निष्फळ at the top of his harsh कठोर  voice. He danced, howled, आक्रोशातून सांगणे  raved बरीच स्तुती केलेली  and otherwise disturbed the skies.
The policeman merely केवळ twirled फिरवला his club, दंडुका turned his back to Soapy and remarked to a citizen:
"Tis one of them Yale lads मुले celebratin the goose हंसाचे egg they give to the Hartford College. Noisy; but no harm. We've instructions to let them be."
Disconsolate, निराश/दुःखी  Soapy stopped his unavailing निष्फळ/अमूल्य racket.Would never a policeman lay ठेवणे hands on him? In his fancy, काल्पनिक the island बेट seemed an unattainable अप्राप्य Arcadia. ग्रीसचा एक जिल्हा He buttoned बटन लावणे  his thin coat against the chilling थंड करणारा wind.
In a cigar store he saw a well-dressed man lighting a cigar at the swinging फिरता light. He had set his silk umbrella by the door on entering. Soapy stepped पायरी चढणे inside, grabbed पकडणे the umbrella and sauntered सुरक्षित off with it slowly. The man at the cigar light followed hastily. घाईने
"My umbrella," he said sternly. कडकपणे
"Oh, is it?" sneered तिरस्काराने बोलणे Soapy, adding insult अपमान to petty शिल्लक larceny. चोरी "Well, why don't you call a policeman? I took it. Your umbrella! Why don't you call a cop? पोलीस There stands one on the corner.
The umbrella owner slowed वेग कमी करणे his steps. Soapy did likewise, त्याचप्रमाणे with a premonition पूर्वीचा that luck would again run against him. The policeman eyed पाहिले at the two curiously. उत्सुकतेने
"Of course," said the umbrella man "Well, you know how these mistakes occur if it's your umbrella.I hope you'll excuse me. I picked it up this morning in a restaurant if you recognize it as yours, why I hope you'll".
(from page no.31). "Of course it's mine," माझा said Soapy savagely. अनियमितपणे
The ex-umbrella man retreated. मागे वळून बघणे The policeman hurried to assist मदत करणे a tall blonde पिवळे केस असलेला गोरा व्यक्ती  in an opera cloak मोठा झगा  across the street in front of a street car that was approaching two blocks अडथळे/अवरोध away.
Soapy walked eastward पूर्वेकडे through a street damaged by improvements. He hurled फेकले the umbrella angrily into an excavation. उत्खनन He muttered against the men who wear helmets and carry clubs. दंडुके  Because he wanted to fall into their clutches, तावडीत सापडले  they seemed to regard आदर him as a king who could do nothing wrong.
At length Soapy reached one of the avenues दुतर्फा झाडे असलेला रस्ता to the east where the glitter चकाकी and turmoil गोंधळ/गडबड was but faint. He dragged himself toward Madison Square, for the homing instinct अंतःप्रेरणा  survives even when the home is a park bench.
But, on an unusually विलक्षणपणे quiet corner, Soapy came to a standstill. परीपूर्ण विराम Here was an old church, quaint चमत्कारिक/विलक्षण and rambling भरकटत जाणारा and gabled. विनम्र होणे Through one violet-stained जांभळ्या रंगाचा  window a soft light glowed, चमकदार where, no doubt, the organist loitered खेळत होता over the keys, making sure of his mastery of the coming Sabbath प्रार्थनेचा/विश्रांतीचा दिवस anthem. प्रार्थना/गीत For there drifted वाहून नेले out to Soapy's ears sweet music that caught and held him transfixed भीतीने/आश्चर्याने स्थिर होणे  against the convolutions गुंतागुंत of the iron fence.
The moon was above, full and radiant; तेजस्वी vehicles and pedestrians पादचारी were few; sparrows twittered चिमण्यांचा चिवचिवाट होता  sleepily in the eaves वळचण/छपराखालचा कडा or a little while the scene might have been a country churchyard. चर्चची जागा And the anthem प्रार्थना/गीत that the organist ऑर्गन वाजवणारा played cemented चिकटलेले Soapy to the iron fence, for he had known it well in the days when his life contained such things  as mothers and roses and ambitions and friends and immaculate पवित्र/निष्कलंक thoughts and collars. अटक करणे/ गळपट्टा
The conjunction of Soapy's receptive ग्रहणक्षमता state of mind and the influences about the old church brought a sudden and wonderful change in his soul. He viewed with rising horror भीती the pit खड्डा into which he had tumbled, अचानक पडलेला the degraded नाश/अवरोध होणे days, unworthy अयोग्य desires, इच्छा dead hopes, wrecked मोडलेले faculties क्षमता and base motives हेतू  that made up his existence.
And also in a moment his heart responded thrillingly थरारकपणे to this strange mood. (From page no.32)  A strong impulse प्रेरणा moved him to battle with his desperate fact. असाध्य वस्तुस्थिती  He would pull himself out of the mire चिखल and  would make a man of himself again; he would conquer the evil that had enslaved गुलाम बनवले him. There was time; he was young yet; he would resurrect पुन्हा जिवंत करणे his old eager ambitions and pursue पाठलाग करणे them without faltering. पाय लटपटने Those solemn गंभीर  but sweet organ notes सुरपट्टी  had set up a revolution क्रांती  in him. Tomorrow he would go into the roaring गर्जना downtown च्या दिशेने district and find work. A fur प्राण्यांचे केस  importer आयात करणारा had once offered him a place as driver. He  would be somebody मोठी व्यक्ती in the world. He would---
Soapy felt a hand laid पडणे - on arm. He looked quickly around into the impassive मोहक/शांत face of a policeman.
"What are you doin' करत आहात here?" asked the officer
                                                       "Nothin', "नाही said Soapy.
"Then come along,"च्या बरोबर said the policeman.
"Three months on the island," said the Magistrate in the Police Court the next morning.
